Using maps to help with famine relief in the Horn of Africa

Google Earth is continuing to be used as a great resource for aiding in humanitarian efforts. From the 2007 Crisis in Darfur map to the Sudan mapping earlier this year, more and more people are finding ways to use geospatial technologies to aid others around the world.

Drought in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti is pushing tens of thousands of people from their homes as millions face food insecurity in a crisis visible from space. ESA’s SMOS satellite shows that the region’s soil is too dry to grow crops.
