Technicians of the Central American Council for Housing and Human Settlements (CCVAH) of El Salvador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic; Representatives of the Metropolitan Areas of Honduras & El Salvador; and the Central American Secretariat for Social Integration (SISCA), visited the United Nations Bonn Campus. They met with experts from the United Nations University, learning about the academic work linked to climate adaptation, resilient urban development, environmental risk, and mobility.

Additionally, the participants learned about the areas of study of the University, urban research, activities related to earth observation and the program, and the United Nations UN-SPIDER Platform. UN-SPIDER gave a presentation about its work, introducing and raising awareness of the potential of space-based technologies for supporting disaster risk reduction and management efforts.

To facilitate the activation of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters in Central America, Mexico and Dominican Republic, UN-SPIDER, the Central American Coordination Centre for Natural Disaster Prevention (CEPREDENAC) and the International Charter Space and Major Disasters organized a regional training course in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from 30 November to 02 December 2021.   Experts from the National Commission on Space Activities of Argentina (CONAE), National Space Research Institute of Brazil (INPE), and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) made participants aware of the procedures used by the International Charter in case of activations, and on the procedures and guidelines that project managers designated by the International Charter must follow when designated as project managers in case of activations. On 11 May 2021, Ms. Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA, and Mr. Vinicio Cerezo, Secretary General of the Central American Integration System (SICA), signed a Memorandum of Understanding for both institutions to work together to further their shared goals and objectives regarding the use of space science and technology for sustainable socio-economic and environmental development.   The MoU will enhance the collaboration between SICA and the UN-SPIDER programme that is managed by UNOOSA, it will enable UNOOSA to explore ways to implement the Space Law for New Space Actors project in Central America, and it will facilitate the organization of capacity-building activities at the regional level to enhance the use of space science and technology for sustainable socio-economic and environmental development.   All these efforts will contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
