Space Hacking of COVID-19

Copernicus Hackathon Sofia is a competition for the development of new applications based on Copernicus Earth observation data and services, under the European Copernicus program. In April 2019, the first edition of Copernicus Hackathon Sofia was successfully held, which aroused great interest and attracted more than 60 participants, mainly from leading universities. The second edition of the hackathon was scheduled to take place from 24 to 26 April 2020 in Sofia. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hackathon will take place virtually and focus on ideas, products and services to address this pandemic. Topics to be addressed by participants in particulare are:

  • Monitoring of the dynamics of air pollution during the pandemic using Sentinel-5
  • Assessment of water quality (basic biological parameters) of the Danube and Black Sea during the COVID 19 pandemic using Sentinel-2 and -3
  • Assessment of the geographical distribution of COVID-19 pandemic at local and global scales, through satellite data (Sentinel satellites) and artificial intelligence algorithms
