Introduction to Using Hazus-MH for Earthquake Loss Estimation

N/A

Description

In this course, you will explore capabilities of Hazus-MH and learn about the ways you can effectively use the information that Hazus-MH generates to reduce the social and economic impacts of earthquakes. The Hazus-MH earthquake model considers information about building stock, economic data, geology, the location and size of potential earthquakes, and other information to estimate losses that might be incurred from an earthquake. Once the location and size of a hypothetical earthquake are identified, the model estimates the violence of the ground shaking, number of buildings damaged, number of casualties, amount of damage to transportation systems, disruption to the electrical and water utilities, number of people displaced from their homes, estimated cost of repairing projected damage, and other effects. In course exercises, you will explore earthquake scenarios and review their social and economic impacts.

Who Should Attend

  • Hazus-MH users who want to generate an estimation of social and economic impacts that might be sustained as a result of an earthquake.
  • Community planners, emergency managers, decision makers, academics, and any other person or organization involved with managing the risks to communities from earthquakes who needs to understand how Hazus-MH can be used to help mitigate those risks.

Learn How To

  • Identify the types of information that Hazus-MH can generate about the social and economic impacts of earthquake events.
  • Explain how Hazus-MH can be used to identify and explore the effectiveness of actions that can reduce the loss of life and property sustained as a result of earthquakes.
