Vietnam: International Charter activated due to Typhoon Haiyan

On 10 November 2013, the International Charter was activated for Vietnam

On 10 November 2013, the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters was activated for Vietnam, where Tropical Storm Haiyan made landfall on early Monday morning bringing concerns whether it will cause widespread flooding. The activation of the Charter was requested by UNITAR/UNOSAT on behalf of UNOCHA, in order to support the affected country with satellite-based information. The rainfall from the storm is the primary concern for its impact on Vietnam given that 10-20 cm of rain may fall over the next two days and even 40 cm in some specific areas.

Annual Report of International Charter Space and Major Disasters published

The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters has launched its 2012 Annual Report describing the Charter's activities throughout 2012. The International Charter is a mechanism by Space agencies worldwide to provide space-based information for disasters and emergencies. The Charter was activated 40 times for disasters in 27 countries in 2012.

On Friday, 13 September 2013, the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters" was activated for the ongoing heavy floods in the US state of Colorado. The mechanism to provide up to date satellite imagery was activated by USGS on behalf of National Guard Bureau/State of Colorado. USGS will also do the project management for this activation.

On 31 August 2013, the Russian Federal Space Agency ROSCOSMOS formally joined the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters, an international mechanism to provide space-based information for disaster response.

Pakistan: International Charter activated for widespread flooding

 Flooding in the Punjab and Sindh Province's of Pakistan

On 22 August 2013, UNITAR/UNOSAT requested the activation of the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters to support Pakistan in its emergency response to the widespread flooding that is affecting the country. Monsoon rains that started in early August have lead to flooding in the Punjab and Sindh Province's of Pakistan, affecting over 1 million people and causing the death of about 130.
