2nd International training workshop on space technology for disaster mitigation

New Zealand's first Disaster Communications Conference

An Auckland Council-sponsored disaster communication conference will be held in Auckland in May.

Attendees will hear some of the world’s leading disaster communications professionals, including Denis McLean, Chief of Communications for the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, discuss their experiences and give advice and tips on how to lead the community through a disaster.

Auckland Council is working with Australian not-for-profit group Emergency Media and Public Affairs (EMPA) to bring the conference to New Zealand for the first time.

The Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti

In May 2009 the United Nations announced the appointment of former United States President Bill Clinton as the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Haiti. In August, Dr. Paul Farmer was appointed as Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti. Both Mr. Clinton and Dr. Farmer have a direct reporting line to the Secretary-General and are on a $1 a year contract. In this role, both work with the Government and people of Haiti as they lead recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Google Maps publishes new imagery of Japan's disaster areas

On the anniversary of the japanese earthquake and tsunami Google Maps published new satellite imagery of the affected areas. The GeoEye high-resolution imagery covers the Northeastern coast from Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture down to Hitachi City in Ibaraki Prefecture. The imagery was taken in February and March 2012. Since the disasters struck Japan on 11 March 2011, Google has continuously been updating satellite and aerial imagery of the area to show the effects of the disaster and the pace of the rebuilding process. The imagery is available on Google Maps as well as on Google Earth.
