Satellite data supports UN anticipatory humanitarian action in Bangladesh

In the latest example of anticipatory humanitarian action, the United Nations released $5.2 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help communities in Bangladesh prepare themselves ahead of major monsoon floods. The allocation of funds to agencies in the country to prepare to deliver support was triggered by a forecast from the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS), which predicted areas having a greater than 50 per cent chance of experiencing a severe flood between 14 and 16 July. Following a second forecast by the Government’s Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre (FFWC) on 11 July, aid workers began distributing the aid.

Satellite-based system to monitor droughts/dzuds handed over to Mongolia

A drought/dzud monitoring system known as “DroughtWatch-Mongolia” has been officially handed over to Mongolia on 17 September by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

DroughtWatch-Mongolia is a system based on satellite data which aims to provide real-time drought monitoring for disaster prevention and mitigation departments in Mongolia.

UNOOSA organizes side event on Earth observation at Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

Prime Minister of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh opens 2018 AMCDRR in Ulaanbaatar.

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), through its Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), is conducting a side event at the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on using Earth observation to implement the Sendai Framework. The session aims to demonstrate the benefits of space-based technologies for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, provide a forum to share experiences Asian countries have had in using space technologies for disaster management, and identify opportunities for collaboration between disaster management authorities in Asia and UN-SPIDER.

Satellite imagery show decline of lake surface in Mongolia

According to researchers from Peking University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, lakes in the Mongolian Plateau are shrinking rapidly. After analysing several decades of satellite imagery, the researchers found that the total lake surface area had declined from 4,160 square kilometers in the late 1980s to 2,900 square kilometers in 2010, a decrease of 30 percent.

The reasons for this enormous decline are the warming temperatures, decreased precipitation, increased mining and agricultural activity, the study notes. The researchers found that Inner Mongolian lakes shrank even more because of intensive mining and farming activity.

For the study, the researchers reviewed 1,240 scenes captured by the Multispectral Scanner, the Thematic Mapper and the Enhanced Thematic Mapper—each of which is a sensor on a Landsat satellite. The results were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences in February 2015.

Mongolia: UN-SPIDER Technical Advisory Mission concluded

Over 40 participants joined the workshop in Mongolia.

From 11 to 15 August 2014, a UN-SPIDER expert team visited Mongolia to evaluate the current and potential use of space-based information in all the aspects of disaster management and to strengthen the disaster risk management efforts in the country by providing better access to space-based information for disaster risk reduction as well as response. This Technical Advisory Mission (TAM) had been requested by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) of Mongolia.

The mission team was comprised of eight international experts from UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER, Beijing, the University of Georgia, USA, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Airbus Defence and Space, France, Asia Disaster Preparedness Centre, Thailand, National Disaster Reduction Centre of China, and the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization, China.

Call for Experts: UN-SPIDER Technical Advisory Mission to Mongolia

UN-SPIDER invites applications from representatives of relevant institutions, organizations, companies or universities interested in joining the expert team for the upcoming Technical Advisory Mission to Mongolia. The mission will be conducted at the invitation of the National Emergency Management Agency of the Government of Mongolia from 11 to 15 August 2014.

The TAM aims to evaluate the current and potential use of space-based and geospatial information in the country and provide recommendations to strengthen disaster management and emergency response efforts in Mongolia. The TAM experts will visit key stakeholder agencies in the capital, as well as, the provincial disaster management offices in two provinces. The TAM also includes one day workshop which will gather around 60 participants from the government organisations, UN offices, donor agencies, NGOs, research institutions and academia.

Mongolia: Space Technologies for drought and dzud monitoring and early warning

Recognizing the socioeconomic and humanitarian effects of drought in the Asia-Pacific region, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) initiated the Regional Cooperative Mechanism for Drought Monitoring and Early Warning, under its Regional Space Applications Programme (RESAP). The Mechanism is active in five countries: Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Nepal and Myanmar. It provides space-base data, products and services to address gaps in monitoring and early warning for drought.

In Mongolia a large number of people is affected by drought, because of the big amount of people depending on land as a source of their livelihood. It is especially important to strengthen the region’s preparedness, monitoring and early warning systems. Mongolia therefore requested additional support for disaster preparedness from ESCAP. Mongolia - Institutional Strengthening Mission

UN-SPIDER conducted a Institutional Strengthening Mission to Mongolia from 2 to 4 September 2019. The UN-SPIDER mission to Mongolia focused on exploring the current usage of space-based and geospatial systems at the National Emergency Management Agency, in order to review progress and provide a follow-up in the context of the recommendations of the report produced following the technical advisory mission, including assistance to become an authorized user of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters. UN-SPIDER also conducted a one-day national workshop for stakeholders from various ministries and a meeting with high-level officials of the National Emergency Management Agency.
