ASAL provides training sessions in remote sensing and GIS to Sahara and Sahel countries

Satellite imagery of the northeastern coast of Algeria

From 24 November to 5 December 2014, the Algerian Space Agency ASAL offered two training sessions in remote sensing and GIS at the Observatory of the Sahara and the Sahel (OSS) headquarters in Tunis, Algeria.

Fourteen candidates from seven countries were involved in the activities. Among the participating countries were Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Chad.

Within the framework of its collaboration with the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL) - host to one of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Offices - has mapped potential locust reproduction zones in the South of Algeria and the North-East of Mauritania. The experts analyzed the ecological conditions of the migratory locust for the period between 18 January and 3 February 2014.

The UN-SPIDER Regional Support Office (RSO) in Algeria is hosted by the Algerian Space Agency (Agence Spatiale Algerienne, ASAL). It was established during the third African Leadership Conference on Space Science and Technology for Sustainable Development on 7 December 2009 in Algiers.

This RSO, which covers both North Africa and the Sahel region, was established as a part of the Central Agency for Civil Protection. In case of an emergency, it will liaise between the end-users of space-based information and the Algerian Space Agency, which will act as a value-adder to space-derived data.

AlSat-2A: 1 year old

The Alsat-2A satellite built by Astrium for the Algerial Space Agency (ASAL) has now been in orbit for one year. Since its launch on 12 July 2010 it has been providing 2.5m resolution imagery of extremely high quality.
