Research analyses potential of satellite data in detecting ground movement before landslides

2014 Landslide in Washington State

Landslides claim many lives and cause economic loss every year. According to one database recording occurrences of landslides, there were 444 landslides leading to 2,250 fatalities in 2016. Five of these landslides were triggered by earthquakes, one of the many natural and human causes for landslides.

RCMRD installs MODIS satellite data receiving station

Early Warning: European Environment Agency publishes lessons learned

New technologies have sometimes had very harmful effects, but in many cases the early warning signs have been suppressed or ignored. The second volume of Late Lessons from Early Warnings published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) investigates specific cases where danger signals have gone unheeded, in some cases leading to deaths, illness and environmental destruction.
