Definition

According to NASA, space weather is the dynamic conditions in the Earth’s outer space environment. It includes any event on the sun, in the solar wind, in near-Earth space and in our upper atmosphere that can affect the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems and through these, human life and endeavor.

Facts and figures

As society becomes increasingly dependent on space-based systems, it is vital to understand how space weather, caused by solar variability, could affect, among other things, space systems and human space flight, electric power transmission, high-frequency radiocommunications, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals, as well as the well-being of passengers in high altitude aircraft.



Some of the solar effects on Earth



Solar activities associated with Space Weather can be divided into four main components, which can have different impacts on Earth:

  • Solar flares (sudden brightening) are flashes of X-rays and ultraviolet rays that affect the ionosphere of the Earth almost immediately, with adverse effect upon communications and radio navigation.
  • Coronal mass ejections, also called CMEs, are large clouds of plasma and magnetic field that erupt from the sun, which can reach the Earth in 30 - 72 hours, setting off a magnetic storm and buffeting the Earth's magnetic shield, which could cause atmospheric heating and damage to pipelines and electric power grids.  Severe magnetic storms resulting from coronal mass ejections are causes of failures of many geostationary orbit communication satellites, disturbances in the operation of satellite positioning systems, radio blackouts and power outages on Earth.
  • High-speed solar wind streams come from areas on the sun known as coronal holes, which are large, dark areas (representing regions of lower coronal density) when the sun is viewed in EUV or x-ray wavelengths. Such wind produces magnetic disturbances which can dump particles from space into the upper air, where they cause the northern lights, as well as the failure of many geostationary orbit communication satellites.
  • Solar energetic particles are high-energy charged particles, primarily thought to be released by shocks formed at the front of coronal mass ejections and solar flares. They can affect low-orbiting satellites to lose energy and fall.

  • DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory) is an American space weather station developed in partnership with NASA, NOAA, and the U.S. Air Force, that monitors changes in the solar wind, providing space weather alerts and forecasts for geomagnetic storms that could disrupt power grids, satellites, telecommunications, aviation, and GPS. DSCOVR orbits approximately 1.5 million km from Earth in a unique location called Lagrange point 1 (L1), the neutral gravity point between the Earth and Sun.

    Instruments:

    • Plasma-Magnetometer (PlasMag): Magnetometer and plasma sensor to measure solar wind properties for forecasting geomagnetic storms.   • Since decades ago, astronomers and astrophysicists have been carrying out research to understand the dynamics of the Sun. The results of this research are allowing those experts in national meteorological offices and other solar/terrestrial observatories to implement the first elements of space weather early warning. On Thursday 8 May 2024, the Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States issued a Watch related to a category 4 severe geomagnetic storm that is impacting the planet as of 10 May 2024, and will continue for several days. According to this Center, it last issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch of this category (G4) in January 2005. The scale is structured in 5 levels (G1 to G5) and the Space Weather Prediction Center indicated that it has monitored G5 conditions these days as well.   • Le Bureau Régional d'Appui (BRA) de ONU-SPIDER en Roumanie est hébergé par l'Agence Spatiale Roumaine (ROSA). L'accord de coopération entre ROSA et UNOOSA a été signé lors de la 52ème session du Comité des Utilisations Pacifiques de l'Espace Extérieur (COPUOS) le 4 juin 2009.

    Créée en 1991, par la décision gouvernementale n° 923/ 20 novembre 1995, ROSA est une institution publique indépendante.

    La mission de l'agence est la suivante

    • coordonner les programmes nationaux de recherche et d'applications spatiales
    • promouvoir le développement de l'espace
    • représenter le gouvernement dans la coopération spatiale internationale
    • développer des projets de recherche spécifiques.

    ROSA est autorisée à établir des centres de recherche et de développement axés sur des objectifs spécifiques du programme spatial roumain.

  • The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) of Pakistan and the United Nations Office of Outer space Affairs (UNOOSA) signed the cooperation agreement on the establishment of a UN-SPIDER Regional Support Office (RSO) on the occasion of the 47th Scientific and Technical Subcommittee sessions on 12 February 2010.

    SUPARCO, the national space agency, was established in 1961 as a Committee and was granted the status of a Commission in 1981. SUPARCO is mandated to conduct R&D in space science, space technology, and their peaceful applications in the country. It works towards developing indigenous capabilities in space technology and promoting space applications for socio-economic uplift of the country.

  • Today, 3 April 2023, the 8th IAA Planetary Defense Conference started in Vienna, Austria, taking place until 7 April as a hybrid conference with two venues.

    The Vienna International Centre hosts the conference from 3-6 April, while the Austrian Academy of Sciences will host it on 7 April. The conference will cover a range of topics related to planetary defense, including ongoing and upcoming mission highlights, hypothetical asteroid threat exercise, key international and policy development, near-Earth object discovery and characterization, deflection and disruption modeling and testing, space mission and campaign design, impact effects and consequences, disaster management and impact response, public education and communications, and political, legal, social, and economic aspects.

    • to develop specific project oriented research

    ROSA is authorized to establish research and development centres oriented on specific objectives of the Romanian Space Programme.
