The Hyogo Framework for Action, the global roadmap for disaster risk reduction from 2005 – 2015 recognizes both community participation and gender-sensitive disaster risk management. Gender perspective is a cross-cutting principle of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2000 – 2015: on Building Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disaster, which states that: “A gender perspective should be integrated into all disaster risk management policies, plans and decision making processes, including those related to risk assessment, early warning, information management and education and training.”
The international community is coming up with policy and practical guidelines on how to mainstream gender in disaster risk management for national governments. The course "Online certificate course on mainstreaming gender into community based disaster risk management" seeks to fill gaps in practical guidance in gender mainstreaming in disaster risk management at the local and community level.
It is imperative that capacities of both women and men must be harnessed so they can address vulnerable conditions and protect themselves, their families and communities against hazards. And this course will strengthen the participants’ knowledge and skills in integrating gender in the concepts and practices of CBDRM.
