THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will provide the satellite images of Sabarimala to the State Government for the infrastructure development of the area in a bid to prevent disasters such as Pulmedu stampede in future, K Radhakrishnan, ISRO Chairman, said.
The Pulmedu stampede on Friday night claimed 102 lives.
He was speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of an international conference on Contemporary Trends in Optics and Optoelectronics at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology here on Monday.
"ISRO has now three dimensional (3D) images of Sabarimala taken by three satellites equipped with remote sensing imaging technology. These images will be handed over to Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) for future use. The images can be used to assess the geographic features of even the unapproachable lands and improve infrastructure in Sabarimala area," he said.
"ISRO, in association with the Union Government, has been involved in disaster management activities for quite some time. A database of geographical features of around 200 disaster prone districts in the country have been prepared by ISRO with the help of satellite images.
