On 15 March 2011, a new World Earthquake Intensity Map on an equal-population map was created. This map explains earthquake intensity in relation to the distribution of the population nowadays, giving an idea of where most people are at risk in regards to seismic activity. It also provides a visualisation of all major earthquakes that have been complied in the Global Significant Earthquake Database containing information on destructive earthquakes from 2150 BC to the present day.
In this regard, on 17 March Astrium GEO-Information Services - distributor of the Formosat-2 satellite's imagery - made its satellite imagery experts available to the international community to follow the evolution of the earthquake in Japan. Due to its atypical orbit and as a high resolution satellite, Formosat-2 is the only one capable of taking images of the same point every day.
