After two activations of the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters" to provide satellite imagery for the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Evan, the Charter was today again activated in the context of this Cyclone; this time for Fiji. It was activated by UNITAR/UNOSAT on behalf of UNOCHA.
Tropical Cyclone Evan hit Fiji at Category 4 strength on 17 December. It is reported to have been the largest storm Fiji has experienced in 20 years. No casualties have been reported, but widespread damage was caused by the powerful winds. The rain and wind resulted in flash floods and caused rivers to burst their banks, leaving buildings damaged or destroyed and some power lines severed. 8000 people were forced to take shelter in the aftermath of the storm, due to damage to their homes.
