The Dartmouth Flood Observatory's mission is:
- to acquire and preserve for public use a digital map record of the Earth’s changing surface water, including changes related to floods, droughts, wetlands, shorelines, lakes, and reservoirs;
- Conduct remote sensing based water measurement and mapping, when appropriate, in "near real time”;
- Support and encourage operational uses of remote sensing based surface water information.
The Observatory was founded in 1993 at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH USA and moved to the University of Colorado, INSTAAR, CSDMS in 2010.
