Africa is the first region to agree on a set of recommendations for the new UN global agreement on reducing disaster risk. At the closing day of the fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, the participants adopted a comprehensive statement with recommendations for the post-2015 Framwork for Disaster Risk Reduction which will be adopted at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction on Sendai Japan, in March 2015.
The Head of UNISDR, Margareta Wahlström, said: “Africa has made 12 recommendations for the integration of climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and recognized the opportunity of 2015 to integrate three agendas around sustainable development goals, a new agreement on climate change and the new framework for disaster risk reduction.”
The recommendations include recognition of risk factors and calls for enhancing institutional capacity and public involvement.
