As a follow up of the UN-SPIDER Technical Advisory Mission (TAM) to Sri Lanka in October 2011, UN-SPIDER organised the training “Space Technology for Improving Hazard Mapping in Sri Lanka” from 14 to 17 August 2012. A second follow up training programme is scheduled from 17 to 21 November 2014.
To support the implementation of recommendations of the TAM, UN-SPIDER has organized this national programme to move forward with the specific recommendations of the TAM. The workshop and training programme “Earth observation technologies for flood risk mapping, modelling and management” will be jointly conducted by UN-SPIDER, the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Centre DMC and the International Water Management Institute IWMI.
The programme will have two parts: A one-day workshop and a training course. The workshop will take place on 17 October in Colombo and include talks from key agencies involved in the field of flood management and mitigation to address disaster risk reduction.
The training course will have a duration of fours days (18 to 21 November 2014). The objective is to allow members of the national disaster management community to learn how to easily, quickly and accurately access and disseminate flood-related information. This will be done with the support of space agencies, mechanisms like the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters and research and academic institutions. Participants will be enabled to better understand flood risk monitoring, planning, and rapid response systems.
