The training course allowed UN-SPIDER to train the staff of the Geospatial Information Group for Risk Management and Emergency Response (EIGEO) team on the use of the UN-SPIDER Recommended Practices for drought monitoring as part of the project to strengthen drought early warning systems. The EIGEO brings together professionals and experts from more than 15 different institutions, universities and NGOs from the Dominican Republic. The training was conducted by experts from the Santa María Federal University, Brazil and Agustín Codazzi Geographic Institute (IGAC), Colombia.
The Agustín Codazzi Geographic Institute -IGAC, through its Center for Research and Development of Geographic Information (CIAF), conducted a workshop on 27 October 2016 on the use of satellite information in early warning systems to deal with drought phenomena. The workshop was attended by professionals from entities including the National Institute of Innovation and Transfer in Agricultural Technology of Costa Rica (INTA), and the Agricultural Planning Unit - UPRA of Colombia.
The UN-SPIDER programme of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the National Emergency Commission of the Dominican Republic (NEC) joined forces to conduct a training course in the premises of the NEC from 20 to 22 July 2016 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The training course focused on the generation of maps depicting the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and the Standard Vegetation Index (SVI) using the Recommended Practices that have been developed by experts for UN-SPIDER.
