ICIMOD: Closer collaboration with Nepal Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment

Much of ICIMOD’s research focuses on the science of climate change&adaptation

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal, host of one of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Offices, has signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MoSTE) of Nepal.

The background of this closer collaboration are the joint efforts towards meeting the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Nepal and the rest of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.

The pre-conference event highlighted the usefulness of space technologies

UN-SPIDER and World Bank's Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) successfully organized a pre-conference event of the 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) in Bangkok. The event entitled "Investing in Geospatial and space-based information to support Disaster Risk Reduction & Climate Change Adaptation investment" was held on 22 June at the Bangkok Convention Center.

Peru: First National Forest Monitoring Maps released

Deforestation in Peru detected by Landsat 8 in August 2013.

Peru hosts about 75 percent of the western Amazon jungle. Deforestation is therefore a critical topic for the country. Now, a major milestone in conserving and managing the western Amazon has been reached by mapping more than 95 percent of Peruvian forests using archived satellite imagery. The Peruvian Ministry of Environment, MINAM, has publicly released its first estimates of deforestation from 2000 to 2011.

UN family agrees on plan for disaster risk reduction

Displaced Family in Thailand

Representatives of UN agencies, funds and programmes completed an action plan this week that will accelerate the integration of disaster risk reduction into all UN country level operations in response to the rising levels of disruption to millions of lives each year from disasters.

The United Nations Plan of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction for Resilience commits to bringing multiple partners together to support the further implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action, the international framework agreement on disaster risk reduction, adopted by all UN member States in 2005.
