The International Charter Space and Major Disasters has been activated for floods in Argentina and Bolivia.

River burst its banks in Salta Province

Heavy rains in the region caused the Pilcomayo river to overflow, leading to displacement of the local population and widespread damages. The river rises in the Andes in Bolivia and flows along the border between Argentina and Paraguay before joining the Paraguay river opposite Asunción.

Forest fires in Chile, the International Charter has been activated

A state of emergency has been declared on 26 January 2017 in south-central Chile due to the worst forest fires that the region has experienced in its modern history. The fires began in mid-January and spread quickly because of this year’s especially hot and dry summer in South America. The blazes are furthermore amplified by strong winds, high temperatures and a lasting drought that Chile has been experiencing in the last 6 years.

The International Charter Space and Major Disasters was activated on 5 January 2017 at the request of the National Civil Protection Secretariat of Argentina (SIFEM) due to wild fires in Buenos Aires, the Central province of Pampa and the southern province of Rio Negro.

Charter reaches new milestone: 500th activation

International Charter reaching a new milestone: 500th activation

The International Charter Space and Major Disasters, which was launched in the fall of th year 2000, has been activated on 01 August 2016 for the 500th time to support emergency relief efforts in Bangladesh due to extreme floods.  The request for activation was elevated by ADRC on behaf of SPARRSO of Bangladesh; and the Asian Institute of Technology has been designated as the project manager for this activation.

International Charter and Copernicus Emergency Management Service activated for earthquake in Afghanistan

The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters has been triggered to provide satellite-based emergency maps in response to the 7.5 magnitude strong earthquake that struck the Hindu Kush region of north eastern Afghanistan at 09:09 UTC on 26 October. Additionally the Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated on 26 October 18:48 UTC, requesting reference and grading maps.

The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters has been triggered to provide satellite-based emergency maps in response to heavy rains that triggered a massive landslide in the "El Cambray 2" urban settlement in Santa Catarina Pinula, Guatemala. The mechanism was activated on 7 October 2015, at 02:57 (UTC+02:00) by the USGS on behalf of the National Emergency Operations Center of Guatemala.

The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters has been triggered to provide satellite-based emergency maps in response to a category four storm that passed over the Bahamas on 2nd. October, causing widespread destruction. Winds of over 130 mph, up to 600mm of rain and 3 metre storm surges have been reported.
