Latest soil moisture instrument to be launched by NASA

On 28 January 2015, NASA will launch the new Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), a remote sensing tool capable of measuring moisture of the Earth’s soils with unprecedented accuracy and resolution.

The latest remote sensing instrument features a radar, a radiometer and the largest rotating mesh antenna ever deployed in space.

SMAP includes both an active instrument, which emits its own signals and a passive instrument, which records already existing signals.

SMAP has been designed by the engineers of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, USA.

Philippines: Geohazard maps for Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda response

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines has elaborated geohazard maps for 131 out of the 171 cities and municipalities that were hit by the typhoon Haiyan -known as Yolanda by local communities- on 8 November 2014.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has adopted the OGC Geo Package 1.0 (GPKG) Encoding Standard. This package will make the exchange of geospatial and location information across devices, applications and web services a lot easier.

Proba-V is ready for operations

Launched on 7 May 2013, ESA’s Earth Observation satellite Proba-V has now completed the crucial commissioning phase and declared ready for its operational phase, providing global vegetation data for operational and scientific use. Designed to map land cover and vegetation development, the Proba-V miniaturised satellite tracks the entire planet every two days alerting authorities to crop failures, monitoring inland water resources and tracing the steady spread of deserts and deforestation.

Algeria: Maps of summer 2012 wildfires available

The maps requested via the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters regarding the wildfires that ravaged north Algerian forests during summer 2012, are now available on the Charter's website.

An estimated 20,000 hectares of land have been ravaged by forest fires in the north of Algeria since June. These are a result of hotter than average summer heat waves that have been reported to reach as high as 50 degrees Celsius.

7.6 Earthquake strikes Costa Rica

The coast of Costa Rica was struck on 5 September 2012 at 08:42 a.m. local time by a major earthquake with the epicenter located in the Nicoya Península. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated a magnitude of 7.6. on the Richter scale. The epicenter is located very close to the surface, approximately in a depth of 10 kilometres. A tsunami warning was in effect for Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre but it was cancelled two and a half hours later based on data gathered from tide gauges.

Tropical Storm Isaac: Esri offers tracking map

Esri offers a free interactive map for tracking Isaac, a Tropical Storm rolling over the Gulf of Mexico on the verge of becoming a hurricane. The map was built using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript and is powered by ArcGIS Server. It offers constantly updated hurricane information on the projected paths, storm surge, weather warnings, and precipitation along with social media links that shows location-based feeds and community-derived content from Youtube, Twitter and Flickr.

MapAction in Haiti

In a humanitarian crisis, relief agencies need rapid answers to questions about 'where'. Where are the greatest needs? Where are the gaps that need to be filled? MapAction is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that works in disaster zones providing frequently updated situation maps showing where relief help is most urgently needed. MapAction has run two missions in Haiti: in 2008 in response to a string of tropical storms that struck the north of the country; and in 2010 after the earthquake.
