Pakistan's Space Agency conducts training on rescue operations

SUPARCO, the National Space Agency of Pakistan, host of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Office in Pakistan, conducted a hands-on training on the COSPAS-SARSAT programme to enhance the capabilities of search and rescue operators in emergency situations using satellite services. The training was carried out on request of the Civil Aviation Authority and took place in the city of Karachi from 17th-19th July 2012.

Satellite Industry partners up with militaries in the Pacfic

Global VSAT Forum (GVF), the international non-profit association of the satellite industry, collaborated with Pacific-Area militaries to conduct an international training to improve disaster preparedness. The program certified military personnel from more than 12 nations as installers of VSAT-based satellite communications systems. The Pacific militaries that participated in the training can not only leverage the capabilities of their GVF-Certified personnel during future disasters, but the stage is also set for further preparedness measures.

The Societal Impacts Committee of the GSDI Association will provide a free training opportunity for up to three candidates from Latin America to attend the ICLPST (International Center for Land Policy Studies and Training) training Seminar on Geographical Information Systems and Land Management in Taipei. International Training Course on Small Satellite Missions

This is event is available for participation on an ongoing basis

The Training Course  on Small Satellite Missions will be held from 29 October to 9 November 2012 at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehardun, followed by facility visits to the ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC) at Bengaluru.

The objectives of the training are:

-To create awareness about small satellites, space technology, and its opportunities;

-To disseminate knowledge required for small satellites technology;

-To sensitize professionals in developing, launching and utilizing the benefits of small satellites and

Training Target Audience: 

Decision makers, senior space technologists, managers, researchers and professionals, academic institutions, space agencies and institutions responsible for regional capacity building in the use of space-based technology

Tuition Remarks: 

Tuition includes course materials and local tours. Acommodation for the participants will be arranged in hostel at IIRS, Dehradun and hotel at Bengaluru. In addition, the participants will have to pay 1$ per day at Dehradun and 36$ per day at Bengaluru towards accommodation charges.

Fellowships for nationals of some countries are available.

Cameroon: Following up on the Technical Advisory Mission

In June 2011, UN-SPIDER conducted a Technical Advisory Mission in Cameroon following the request by the Government of Cameroon, represented by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Department of Civil Protection. The goal was to assess the use of space-based technology and information for disaster management and emergency response in Cameroon, to identify potential areas where space-based technology and information could play a greater role, and propose recommendations on how to improve Cameroon‘s access to and use of space-based technology and information.

Cameroonian radio RTV reports on UN-SPIDER training

The Cameroonian radio channel RTV referred to the training that has been coordinated by UN-SPIDER on the use on space-based information for disaster management and emergency. The four-day training took place in Yaoundé from 7 to 11 May 2012 and aimed at sensitizing the civil protection personnel and the decision makers to the use of space-based technology in the management of natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and gas explosions.

On 9 April 2012 UN-SPIDER inaugurated the international training course “Space technology applications in Disaster Risk Reduction” organised at the Centre for Space Science Technology Education for Asia and the Pacific (CSSTEAP), the UN affiliated regional centre based in Dehradun, India. The Course will be conducted until 4 May 2012.
