The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters was activated on 22 August 2014 to provide satellite-based maps to Bangladesh due to severe flooding events. The mechanism was triggered by UNITAR/UNOSAT on behalf of UNOCHA. The project management of the activation is handled by AIT.
The International Charter reported: "Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in the northern provinces of Bangladesh. The districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Rangpur, Sirajganj, Jamalpur and Lalmonirhat have been flooded by recent heavy rains and waters from upstream India."
Flood maps and other satellite-based products will be published on the International Charter's website as soon as they become available.
