A new system for selecting and automatically classifying oceanic images taken via satellite has been developed by researchers of the University of Almeria (Spain), in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania (USA).
The programme facilitates the identification of large structures that originate in the ocean and that are difficult to recognise. The researchers used imagery from NASA's Aqua and SeaWiFSIn this sense, the system will provide scientists and researchers with an useful tool to measure and analyse various events occurring in the oceans. The system will be useful to study phenomena such as the movements of currents, water temperature, the overall decrease of chlorophyll or changes in marine ecosystems.
