As a follow-up to the recommendations of the technical advisory mission to Mozambique conducted in October 2012, UN-SPIDER conducted a Institutional Strengthening Mission and jointly with UNDP-Mozambique organized a national training course on disaster mapping using space technology in Maputo. The course took place at the Eduardo Mondlane University.

The training course which was part of the Institutional Strengthening Mission targeted more than 20 participants from the following institutions: Instituto Nacional de Gestão das Calamidades, Instituto de Investigação Agrária de Moçambique, Centro Nacional de Cartografia e Teledetecção, Administração Regional de Aguas do Sul, Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia, Direcção Nacional de Planeamento e Ordenamento Territorial, Municipality of Maputo, Universidade Técnica de Moçambique and Eduardo Mondlane University.
The experts from UN-SPIDER, the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and NDRCC introduced the participants to the concepts of hazard, vulnerability and risk; the basics of Earth observation satellites; geodata for disaster management; rapid mapping and functioning with regard to operational aspects of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters; and other topics. Hands-on exercises were provided on flood forecasting, flood detection, drought monitoring and rapid mapping of disasters.
