On this 3-day course, you will learn the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematically analysing and managing the causal factors of disasters. The course examines reducing exposure to hazards, lessening vulnerability of people and property, wisely managing land and the environment, and improving preparedness for adverse events.
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), through its Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), is conducting a side event at the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on using Earth observation to implement the Sendai Framework.
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has published guidelines on national disaster risk assessments to support the implementation of the Sendai Framework at the national level. National Disaster Risk Assessment (NDRA) is part of the organization's series of thematic guidelines "Words into Action", which aims to offer practical guides to implement the Sendai Framework.

The 2017 EFDRR Open Forum will be hosted by the Government of Turkey from 26 to 28 March 2017 in Istanbul, Turkey. As a requirement of the Sendai Framework, one of the intended outcomes of this Open Forum will be to compile experiences; lessons learnt and gap analyses to be presented during the 2017 Global Platform in Cancun, Mexico in May 2017. The Open Forum will be a unique opportunity to shape the implementation and monitoring of the Sendai Framework in Europe.
The 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will be held in Cancun, Mexico on 22-26 May. It is the first time that the Global Platform Session is hosted outside Geneva. There are more than 5,000 participants expected, including policy makers and disaster risk managers.
On 1st and 2nd December 2016 the UN-SPIDER programme carried out the International Expert Meeting on the Global Partnership on Space Technology Applications for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP-STAR) in Bonn, Germany. The goal was to facilitate synergies among experts involved in the GP-STAR and other professionals interested in promoting the use of space technology applications in disaster risk reduction. The meeting brought together approximatley 30 experts from national, regional and international organizations and institutions.
The World Science Day for Peace and Development established by UNESCO in 2001 is commemorated every year on 10 November. It is not only a symbolic but essential celebration considering that Science is at the center to reach the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sendai Framework for Action and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), through its Programme on Space Applications and the UN-SPIDER platform, and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are jointly organising this workshop in order to share experiences from Asia and other parts of the World in using Earth observation for disaster management.
