Eighth UN-SPIDER Beijing conference discusses enhancing disaster preparedness for effective emergency response

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), through the United Nations Platform for Spaced-Based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), is conducting the eighth edition of the United Nations International Conference on Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction from 24 to 26 October in Beijing, China. The event is organized together with the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People’s Republic of China. This year, the focus of the conference lies on “Enhancing Disaster Preparedness for Effective Emergency Response”.

UN-SPIDER conducts Technical Advisory Mission follow-up and national training programme in Sri Lanka

At the request of the Government of Sri Lanka, through the Ministry of Disaster Management (MoDM), UN-SPIDER carried out a Technical Advisory Mission (TAM) follow-up activity to Sri Lanka to understand long-term capacity building needs and discuss joint activities in next three to five years.

The United Nations commemorated its 20th anniversary since its establishment in Bonn, Germany in June 1996.  Taking into consideration the recent launch of the Sustainable Development Goals, the theme for this anniversary celebration was “Shaping a Sustainable Future”.    UN-SPIDER joined the festivities on 28 and 29 October 2016. During the UN Talks held in the evening of 28 October, the Head of the UN-SPIDER Bonn Office focused his remarks on the role of space-based information in disaster risk reduction as essential when addressing sustainable development.

UN-SPIDER Technical Advisory Mission to Lao PDR

UN-SPIDER carried out a Technical Advisory Mission to Lao PDR from 6-10 July 2015. The mission was conducted upon invitation from the Ministry of Science and Technology. The mission staff also worked closely with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), in particularly with the Department of Disaster Management and Climate Change (DDMCC), which is a secretariat of the National Disaster Prevention and Control Committee (NDPCC).
