The European Commission re-affirmed its commitment to disaster risk reduction in the Caribbean by launching the Disaster Preparedness (DIPECHO) action plan 2013-2014. 8,5 million Euro will be invested in disaster preparedness and reducing vulnerabilities related to natural hazards in the Caribbean.
In the early morning of July 28, 2011, Dominica's Matthieu Dam was breached, damaging infrastructure downstream in the Layou River valley. In the context of the ongoing Caribbean Satellite Disaster Pilot, an initiative involving a host of entities including the Caribbean Disaster & Emergency Management Agency, CATHALAC, NASA, UN-SPIDER, and others, recently completed an assessment of the Matthieu Dam collapse.
The Virgin Islands, through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), has been selected for a project in the Caribbean Satellite Disaster Pilot (CSDP) No.2.
Mr. Dirk Werle of AERDE Research and Ms. Claire Gosselin of VIASAT, Canada are conducting a two day workshop at the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) to provide an overview of the Project, and to demonstrate how satellite imagery may be used by Disaster Management Organisations following significant hazard events.
The Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management is celebrating five (5) years as the signature disaster management event in the region. This year the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), in association with its partners, and in collaboration with the Office for Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPEM), Jamaica, will host the Conference under the theme “CDM: Strengthening Partnerships for Resilience” at the Rose Hall Resort and Spa, Montego Bay, Jamaica December 6-10, 2010.
