The 60th session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space will take place in Vienna from 7-16 June 2017. COPUOS was set up by the General Assembly in 1959 to govern the exploration and use of space for the benefit of all humanity: for peace, security and development.
The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) concluded its 59th annual session in the premises of the United Nations Office at Vienna. The Committee was set up by the General Assembly in 1959.
The Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STSC) of the Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) conducted its annual session from 15 to 26 February 2016 in the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), to discuss relevant issues related to the scientific and technical aspects of space activities. Topics for discussion included space weather, near-Earth objects, space debris, the use of space technology for socioeconomic development, or for disaster management support, global navigation satellite systems, and the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is pleased to announce an agreement with the Swiss Government to support the development of new initiatives to advance the use of space-based tools and technology in the various areas of work of Geneva-based United Nations entities, international organisations or non-governmental organisations.
The United Nations designated the period between 1990-1999 as theInternational Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). Under the umbrella of IDNDR, experts from many fields began to shape the global framework for disaster risks and their management. Of particular relevance was the introduction of several concepts related to disaster-risk, including hazard, vulnerability, exposure, and risk; as well as the need to reduce disaster-risks for a more sustainable development of communities worldwide.
