Copernicus Emergency Management Service activated for floods in northern France and storm in Germany

Rise of the Seine river, 26 January 2018

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated on 23 January due to floods in northern France. Paris and the northeastern part of France are affected as a result of prolonged heavy rains causing a rise of the rivers Seine, Rhine and Ill. Authorities from Meteo France emitted an orange alert for floods.

Chile: International Charter activated because of forest fires

The International Charter: Space and Major Disaster was activated on 14 April due to forest fires, near the city Valparaiso, Chile. The fires have killed 12 people and over 10 thousands were evacuated. 

The fires started on Saturday, 12 April, and moved towards the city destroying more than 500 homes. Minor explosions were detected and smoke spread is causing breathing problems to the citizens. Firefighters are trying to stop the spread of the fire, but coastal winds and expected rise in the temperature are threatening to push the fires back into the city.

Togolese Ministry of Environment and Forest Resource (MERF)

MERF is responsible for coordinating the development and implementing policies about all that concerns environmental issues, forest resources and wildlife. It also aims to develop the legislation for environmental protection, prevention and fight against pollution and nuisances. The MERF has been trusted with the responsibility for disaster reduction in Togo since October 2006. It hosts the Disaster Risk Reduction platform.

Algeria: Maps of summer 2012 wildfires available

The maps requested via the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters regarding the wildfires that ravaged north Algerian forests during summer 2012, are now available on the Charter's website.

An estimated 20,000 hectares of land have been ravaged by forest fires in the north of Algeria since June. These are a result of hotter than average summer heat waves that have been reported to reach as high as 50 degrees Celsius.
