The Africa Working Group (AWG) on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) meets bi-annually to take stock of the progress made regionally on the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) and the Africa Regional Strategy for DRR and its Extended Programme of Action: 2006-2015.
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) is issuing a Third Call for Abstracts as part of the development of the 2015 Global Assessment Report (GAR15). The GAR15 will be published prior to the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015, in which governments will adopt a successor framework to the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA).
A recent study conducted with eleven member States of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found that “all respondents reported that their DRR funding has either slightly, or significantly, increased since the launch of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) in 2005”, as UNISDR reported. The HFA is an international action plan adopted by all UN member States to reduce mortality and economic losses from disasters.
Governments from over 50 countries in Africa will meet in Arusha, Tanzania from 13-15 February for the Fourth Africa Regional Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction (ARP) to address the challenges of building a disaster resilient society.

This meeting will be held from 20 to 22 February 2012 in Bangkok, as a follow-up activity to the Expert Group Meeting on Geo-reference Disaster Risk Management System in Asia-Pacific Region held from 15 to 17 February 2012 in Bangkok , and also an activity of the project entitled “ Improving Disaster Risk Preparedness in the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Region ” which ESCAP is currently implementing .
The United Nations disaster risk reduction office today announced the start of consultations on a new international blueprint for reducing disaster losses ahead of a conference on the issue that Japan has offered to host in 2015. Margareta Wahlström, the head of the secretariat of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), said the new blueprint will build on the success of the 2005-2015 Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) that was aimed at making the world safer from natural hazards.
The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) Regional Office for Asia & Pacific organized this meeting to focus on the next cycle of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) progress reporting, HFA mid-term review and the preparation for the Fourth Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR). The meeting was attended by 19 countries from the Asia-Pacific region, and by intergovernmental organizations namely ASEAN, APEC and SOPAC, UN agencies, donors and other organizations involved in disaster risk reduction (DRR).
