New tool for global severe index allows climate community to assess meteorological drought by terrestrial water storage

A new technique has been developed to help mitigate the effects of drought. The satellite-based drought severity index (DSI) has been created using terrestrial water storage changes from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) to help identify the timing, extent and severity of droughts for adequate relief efforts.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal, host of one of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Offices, has signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MoSTE) of Nepal.

The background of this closer collaboration are the joint efforts towards meeting the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Nepal and the rest of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.

Offshore wind farms could weaken hurricane power

A recent study conducted by Mark Z. Jacobson, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the Stanford University, Cristina Archer and Willett Kempton of the University of Delaware, shows that offshore wind farms could have sapped the power of three real life hurricanes.

The scientists base their research on computer simulations of hurricanes Sandy and Isaac from 2012 and Katrina from back in 2005. "We found that when wind turbines are present, they slow down the outer rotation winds of a hurricane," Jacobson said.

In mid-October, effective disaster planning, government cooperation, preparedness at the community level and early warning communication contributed to a minimal death toll in the wake of the strongest cyclone to hit India in 14 years, Cyclone Phailin. Early warning alerts, disseminated four days before Phailin struck land in October 12, 2013 led to the evacuation of nearly 1.2 million people and the relocation of more than 30,000 animals.
