Satellite data supports UN anticipatory humanitarian action in Bangladesh

In the latest example of anticipatory humanitarian action, the United Nations released $5.2 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help communities in Bangladesh prepare themselves ahead of major monsoon floods. The allocation of funds to agencies in the country to prepare to deliver support was triggered by a forecast from the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS), which predicted areas having a greater than 50 per cent chance of experiencing a severe flood between 14 and 16 July.

Satellite operators sign Crisis Connectivity Charter at the World Humanitarian Summit Global Consultation

On 14 October at the World Humanitarian Summit Global Consultation in Geneva, the satellite operators Eutelsat, Hispasat, Inmarsat, Intelsat, SES, Thuraya and Yahsat signed the Crisis Connectivity Charter in partnership with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC).

World Humanitarian Data and Trends 2014 report shows new opportunities for remote sensing technology in humanitarian assistance

The Policy Analysis and Innovation Section of the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) released the World Humanitarian Data and Trends 2014 report, dealing with humanitarian needs and assistance in 2013, as well as humanitarian trends, challenges and opportunities in the global context.

The report illustrates how while 2013 witnessed roughly the same number of disasters as 2012, the number of affected people decreased from 124.5 million in 2012 to 97 million in 2013.

Iran: UN encourages sharing of disaster information

UN humanitarian chief Valeria Amos stated that the UN favors information sharing

Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, in an interview with the Iranian Islamic Republic News Agency IRNA underscored the importance of sharing critical information on disasters. She stated that the UN favors cooperation with Iran in sharing information on crisis management as the country ranks sixth worldwide in term of being prone to natural disasters, as IRNA reported.

Typhoon Pablo: OCHA activates Crowdsourcing Community

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) activated the Digital Humanitarian Network (DHN) on December 5th to collect all relevant tweets about Typhoon Pablo posted on December 4th and 5th; identify pictures and videos of damage/flooding shared in those tweets; geo-locate, time-stamp and categorize this content. OCHA requested that this database be shared with them by 5am Geneva time the following day. As per DHN protocol, the activation request was reviewed within an hour.

60 local, foreign experts to join UN course on disaster review

Some 60 local and foreign experts on disaster assessment will attend in Makati City from May 16 to 20 the country's first United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) refresher course.

The Makati City government said the course will be held at the Makati City Hall is in partnership with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva.
