USGS: Launch of 3D Elevation Program

The US Geological Survey (USGS), along with other government agencies and the private sector, recently launched the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), composed on current and accurate three-dimensional mapping data finalized to replace outdated and inconsistent data.The USGS hosted a briefing in Washington on 25 July 2014 to discuss 3DEP and its benefits in more detail, demonstrating how the programme is being used nationwide and what it aims to accomplish.

China: Successful launch of Yaogan XX remote-sensing satellite

Remote sensing satellites enable studying many aspects of the planet.

On 9 August 2014, the Yaogan XX remote-sensing satellite was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Jiuquan, northwest China's Gansu Province.

The satellite will be used to conduct scientific experiments, carry out land surveys, monitor crop yields and aid in preventing and reducing natural disasters, the center said.

Southeast Asia: Global Forest Watch Fires released

154  forest and land fires across Riau province on 20 July.

GFW-Fires is a new dynamic online platform for forest monitoring and fire alert system covering Southeast Asia by providing near-real time information and high-resolution satellite images. Thanks to this tool, fires can be precisely pinpointed in time and space and the impact of each one can be accurately measured and mapped, empowering people to better combat forest fires before they burn out of control.

Japan: Full scale disaster management system with Quasi-Zenith Satellites

The Japanese national newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported on 22 July 2014 that a full-scale operation of Quasi-Zenith satellites is projected to start in 2018, after that a first one, Michibiki, was launched in September 2010.

Philippines: LiDAR mapping of major river basins completed

The Philippines are frequently affected by floods

The Department of Science and Technology  of Philippines (DOST) has achieved the Light Ranging and Detection Technology (LiDAR) mapping of the three major river basins in Western Visayas.

As part of the Disaster Risk Assessment, Exposure and Mitigation (DREAM) project, the mapping will assess the risk of flooding in Jalaur River, Panay River and Ilog-Hilabangan River in Negros Island.

Russia: New Space monitoring station for emergency prevention and prediction

NASA's Terra satellite image shows the impact Ural has on weather developments

Yesterday, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM), host to one of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Offices, announced that it will set up a new space monitoring station for prevention and prediction of emergency situations in the Urals.

The station will be established in the new Emergency Center in Sverdlovsk and will cover the northern part of the Arctic Zone, the Urals and Volga Region.
