Recognizing the need to contribute to disaster response and recovery efforts, the United Nations established in 1971 its own mechanism to provide international assistance to governments when such governments elevate a request for humanitarian assistance. Humanitarian Open Street Map Team launches Tasking Manager V2

In mid-July 2014, the Humanitarian Open Street Map team (HOT) launched a new Version 2 update to their Tasking Manager. This tool makes it even easier for people to contribute to the maps, giving them access to project descriptions on recent humanitarian mapping work, and to join in with the mapping by taking a task.

EU-Civil Protection Unit deployed in Haiti

The death toll from the 12 January 2010 earthquake in Haiti stands at over 220,000 people. 1.3 million have been displaced by the earthquake. The EU response to the plight of the Haitian people was prompt and included civil protection. Alongside the humanitarian aid provided through the Commission's DG ECHO, civil protection is a key part of the EU response.
