The National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology is an entity with administrative and technical autonomy, with national jurisdiction throughout Ecuador and with international representation. It maintains the representation of Ecuador in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and its activities are aimed at: improving the quality and coverage of the information from the hydrometeorological stations; keeping the meteorological database updated; facilitating the access of technical information for users; enabling and enhancing the alerts of hydrometeorological adverse phenomena to ensure that they reach the public; strengthening and improving the services provided about weather, climate and environment; and informing people about the socioeconomic benefits of a better understanding of climate and water resources distribution.
