Monitoring the Oceans from Space

Oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface. To better understand our oceans data from Earth observation satellites is fundamental as it provides a clear perception. This data is provided by Sentinel-3, which is part of the EU’s Earth observation programme, Copernicus.

The Copernicus Marine Environment Service receives data from the Sentinel-3 satellite, which is then interpreted and distibuted into marine resources, maritime safety, coastal and marine environment, and climate monitoring services. Currently, the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellite (EUMSTAT) is involved in the daily operations of Sentinel-3.

EUMETSAT is set to re-launch a modified online course on Monitoring the Oceans from Space. The course is funded by the European Union. The course objective will be to explain the role of satellites in monitoring oceans.
