The Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission (EC) established in 1998 an expert group to develop and implement advance methods for the evaluation of forest fire danger and mapping vulnerable areas in Europe. In 2000, the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) became operational.

The EFFI supports the  protection of forest against fires in the EU and neighbour countries. The main activities of EFFIS are accomplished thought the following modules*:

  • Fire Danger Forecast
  • Active fire Detection
  • Rapid Damage Assessment
  • Fire Damage Assessment
  • Daily MODIS
  • European Fire Database
  • Under development
