Agriculture is one of the main drivers of Togo’s economy, but the steep drop in global cotton prices in recent years dealt a blow to many farmers. The rates of food insecurity and vulnerability are really high, as well as the country’s risk to natural disasters and the lack of income diversification. FAO works with governments to build up infrastructures, promote sustainable agricultural practices and improve farmers’ access to technical assistance, training, credit and markets. Its overall aim is to strengthen food security over the long run as well as farmers' ability to withstand future climate or market shocks. FAO is also providing policy advice and monitoring global, regional and domestic food prices.
