The National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) is a public body, dependent on the Ministry of Defense, whose task is to ensure an optimal response of society in the event of disasters, supervise the attention of the people affected by them, coordinate with the entities responsible for the actions required to address the emergency, rehabilitate the affected areas, and coordinate with regional and local governments the assessment of damages and needs in case of disaster.
Indeci was created by Law No. 29664 of February 19, 2011, which created the National Disaster Risk Management System (Sinagerd) as a decentralized system, in order to identify and reduce the risks associated with disasters.
