From publically available satellite images such as LANDSAT to the creation of digital globes, the tools researchers and students use to visualize the Earth have changed dramatically over the last several decades. Working to further this shift is the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE). The ISDE’s mission is to use global cooperation to create a comprehensive geospatial model of the Earth to inform scientific and political decisions about environmental and other Earth observation-related concerns. One way this mission is promoted is by assisting in the coordination of international summits on the topic. This Digital Earth Summit will have a strong emphasis on how Earth imaging technologies can be used to support education for sustainable development. Other topics will include the role of digital Earth technologies in citizen science, science communication, disaster education and more.
