Symposium on "20 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry"

Event Organisers:

French Space Agency, CNES

24/09/2012 to 29/09/2012

In 2012 we are celebrating the twenty-year anniversary of the launch of ERS-1 and TOPEX/POSEIDON. To mark this occasion the European Space Agency, in collaboration with the French Space Agency, CNES, is organising an exceptional Symposium on "20 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry". This follows on from the "15 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry" Symposium in 2006, deemed an important landmark by the participants and the readership of the Proceedings.

The symposium will be organised around key papers, presenting the challenges we have overcome to develop our current understanding of the Earth’s surface variations observed by altimetry, and the perspectives for future developments in each of the following themes:
20 years of Progress in Radar Altimetry: a historical perspective (keynote presentations); Advances in our understanding of the open ocean; Advances in our understanding of coastal processes; Advances in our understanding of the Cryosphere; Altimetry over Land; Altimetric contributions to gravity field, marine geoid, bathymetry modeling and orbit determination; Building the 20-year altimetric record: challenges and achievements; Synergy between Altimetry, other data and models: “the integrated approach”; Outlook; Outreach

During the Symposium week, several related altimetry events will take place, including the annual meeting of the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team (OSTST), the International Doris Service (IDS) Workshop and the Argo Science Workshop.  Other thematic workshops (like Sea Level for Climate, Coastal Altimetry) are being organised in or around the same week.
