The Humanitarian Open Street Map (HOT) team launched a kickstarter project to support the development of the first free Haitian Creole Open Street Map Book. Since the earthquakes in 2012 HOT has made OpenStreetMap the most detailed base map for Port-au-Prince available. Their map was used by search and rescue teams, the World Bank, the United Nations and other organizations working on the ground. However adequate training materials are still not available in Haitian Creole keeping Haitian locals from effectively using this free of charge resource.
To support the hosting of a translation workshop in Haiti, HOT launched a project on the kickstarter portal. Kickstarter is a fundraising platform allowing the interested public to contribute to projects of their choice. In return they get a thank you token such as print versions of the OpenStreetMap Book or an invitation to join the translation sprint.
