The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has adopted the OGC Geo Package 1.0 (GPKG) Encoding Standard. This package will make the exchange of geospatial and location information across devices, applications and web services a lot easier.
GeoPackage is especially relevant for mobile application developers whose products need to provide users with geospatial information in disconnected or limited network connectivity environment, or whose applications depend on such data. GeoPackage supports a wide variety of applications such as those that involve the creation of geospatial data products in enterprise computing environments, data product distribution to other computing environments, mobile workforce data capture and updates, and volunteered geographic information.
All technical features and more information about the new Encoding Standard can be found at the official GeoPackage website. The OGC is international consortium of more than 470 governmental and non-governmental organizations that work to develop publicly available geospatial standards. The main goal of this Package is to enable developers to make geospatial information accessible and useful with any application.
