World Space Forum 2024 in Bonn kicks off with a Vision for a Sustainable Space Future

The World Space Forum 2024, organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in collaboration with Germany, Peru and the United Arab Emirates, has officially opened its doors in Bonn, Germany, setting the stage for three days of transformative discussions on international collaboration and space sustainability. The opening session, marked by a vibrant call for collective action, underscored the forum’s mission: to harness the power of space for the betterment of Earth and its people.

The Director of UNOOSA emphasized the critical role of dialogue and innovation in addressing global challenges in her keynote. “Sustainable solutions in space begin with conversations here on Earth,” she stated, setting an aspirational tone for the discussions ahead.

The forum’s first day, which hosted around 400  participants from over 90 countries, featured two key sessions: In Session I: Retrospective participants took a reflective dive into pivotal outcomes from the Summit of the Future and the UN/Portugal Conference on Sustainable Outer Space Activities. Session II: Space4SDGs explored the intersection of space technologies and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and illuminated how satellite data and other space technologies are driving meaningful change.

The second day of the World Space Forum is focusing on sustainable space activities and lunar explorations. The Forum will be closed on Thursday with the session on the implementation of the Pact for the Future.
