In 2003, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was created by President George W. Bush and a bipartisan Congress. PEPFAR aims to combat HIV/AIDS, establishing and expanding the infrastructure necessary to deliver prevention, care, and treatment services in low resource settings.
The goals of PEPFAR for the next five years are to support prevention of 7 million infections in five years, to treat for 2 million HIV-infected individuals, to care for 10 million infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, including orphans and vulnerable children. In order to achieve its objectives, PEPFAR received total funding of more than $18 billion from the Unite State Government. (Health)
