The International Charter "Space and Major Disasters" was activated on 18 October 2013 in order to provide space-based information supporting storm and flood response efforts in Vietnam. Typhoon Nari had made landfall on the central coast of Vietnam on 15 October, with maximum winds of 102 kph, and caused floods that inundated thousands of homes and left 11 people dead.
The mechanism was activated by the Asia Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC). Affected provinces include: Quang Nam, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, Nghe An, Quang Binh and Binn Dinh. The satellite-based maps will be published on the International Charter's website as soon as they become available.
