Latin America is moving ahead on integrating Disaster Risk Reduction strategy into national development policy instrument and poverty reduction strategies.
The Latin America Parliament, a permanent organization composed by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, adopted a protocol that obliges its 23 members to incorporate disaster risk reduction principles of building resilience into existing or emerging legislation. The main idea of agreeing on this protocol, was to unite in order to minimize the risks and effects of disaster, said Mr. Zambrano, representative from Venezuela.
The Protocol sets the focus on better management and support to people who are displaced by disasters, but it also calls for the establishment of a Regional Unit for Disaster Risk Management to support the coordination between states.
