On October 1, 2003, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL) and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) were merged into one independent administrative institution to be able to perform all their activities in the aerospace field as one organization, from basic research and development to utilization. The independent administrative institution is the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) makes efforts to solve global environmental problems through its earth observation program. Concerned about pollution prevention and environmental preservation, it is actively promoting ISO 14001 (an environmental management system).
Moreover, JAXA is engaged in various activities to promote research and development in the aerospace field. These activities include:
- International Cooperation;
- Collaboration with Industry;
- Educational Activities (e.g. the Space Education Center);
- Public Relations.
