From 10 to 14 November UNOOSA has been involved in the ninth meeting of the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG) held in Prague, Czech Republic.

ICG's ninth conference has been organized by the European Commission and the European GNSS Agency (GSA) and was directed towards the improvement of coordination among providers of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), specifically to support sustainable development. Attendees of the event included the representatives of China, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the Russian Federation, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America and the European Union, as well as members of international organizations and non-governmental organizations.

From 10 to 12 September, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) held its Concluding Meeting of the 22nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum.

UN-SPIDER was invited to participate in the meeting to make a presentation on ICT solutions for disaster early-warning and disaster response, the role of space-based monitoring and warning systems, as well as on innovative approaches to data information management.

The Concluding Meeting was dedicated to the topic "Responding to environmental challenges with a view to promoting cooperation and security in the OSCE area". The meeting brought together delegations of the OSCE, high-ranking officers from international and regional organizations, as well as experts on disaster-risk reduction and emergency response.

UN-SPIDER's Senior Programme Coordinator, Mr Luc St-Pierre, participated in the European Space Solutions Conference, which took place from 11 to 13 June 2014 in Prague, Czech Republic.

At the invitation of EC-COPERNICUS, Mr St-Pierre presented the approach of UN-SPIDER and approaches to reduce vulnerabilities to hazards through good practices in geospatial information management in the panel “From Emergency Response to Risk Reduction”.

The 3-day conference brought together business and the public-sector with users and developers of space-based solutions. Participants learned about the potential for using space technologies from the European Space Programmes Galileo/EGNOS (navigation) and Copernicus (Earth observation) in their fields of work, gather insights about current developments, and discuss what is possible and needed in the future.

The International Consortium on Geo-disasters (ICGdR) together with the Czech scientific community shall be holding the 13^th International Symposium on Geo-disaster Reduction in Prague between the 9^th and 11^th of August 2015. The forthcoming event is an opportunity to bring to­gether geoscientists, engineers and social scientists to collaborate on disaster reduction worldwide.

The platform of ICGdR offers challenging topics for researchers working on different themes connected with earthquakes, landslides, volcanic activity, tsunamis, floods or atmospheric hazards. The geo­envi­ron­mental disaster mitigation and recovery community is also warmly welcome.

The 2016 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium follows the previous successful symposia held in Edinburgh (2013), Bergen (2010), Montreux (2007) and Salzburg (2004).

A first announcement has been released, with a deadline for abstract submission on 16 October 2015. All received abstracts will be reviewed by a Scientific Committee, notification of acceptance will be provided in early February 2016. Registration to attend the event will be opened in February 2016, after the publication of the preliminary programme.

Full papers for accepted contributions shall be provided at the event and will be published as ESA Special Publication. An Exhibition will be running from 9 to 12 May 2016. 

On the occasion of the Gi4DM conference, the URSI Working Group F.1 (on Education and Training in Remote Sensing and Wave Propagation) and the ISPRS ICWG III/IVa will organize a one-day tutorial on 3 September 2019 with a title: “Advanced Radar Methods and their Application in Disaster Managemen

The world has experienced several devastating disasters in this century, first an Earthquake of a very high magnitude and then Tsunami afterwards or heavy rain flows, followed by floods and landslides are common occurrences. These are conditions where even the most advanced EWS cannot make a significant difference. So, most of the potential to mitigate such a disaster in the future would have to be in the field of vulnerability reduction by adaptation, e.g. in urban planning and construction, based on risk and vulnerability maps.
